trapped in transition
Eva-Maria Raab catches ephemeral phenomenons and invites us to relook at our surroundings. She captures the movement—whether of plants, sea waves, melting ice or, in this series, the cleaning brushes of a car wash. Like powerful abstract paintings, the photos show the washing process from the inside of her car, a kind of surreal moment. Not allowed to get out, the car stands still and is slightly shaken by the movement of the water jets and the brushes. The petrol station with its car wash can be clearly seen as a “non-place” as defined by Marc Augé, it’s a space only for transition. Being kind of trapped in the car and forced to stay inside, fixes the space for the duration of the washing.
